What is anamorphic widescreen DVD? On the back of many rental DVDs that you rent from online and highstreet DVD shops you will find a range of aspect ratios that tell you the way that your film picture will be shown on your close aspect ratio or widescreen television screen, and these include anamorphic widescreen 16x9, enhanced for widescreen TV and ultra wide aspect ratio. The thing is, because DVD is a high resolution format that has been agreed by the DVD Consortium to support Hollywood blockbuster film studios and producers. Because movies are mastered in anamorphic widescreen, and using THX, Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 and 6.1 stereo and computer components the video quality you get on your dvd player in your home will be as good if not better than you see in some small local cinemas. You'll certainly pay less for your popcorn and coca cola, and the seats are more comfortable. So how does widescreen, anamorphic and 16x9 aspect ratio differ when you are watching blockbusters? Well now that pan and scan and letterbox formats are not necessary because of widescreen TV you are saved the trauma of black bars at the top and bottom of your screen and you can see the blockbuster film in the way that the director intended.
